While it's important for each of us to take action to protect the planet year-round, Earth Month offers a special opportunity to step up our efforts or renew our focus, especially as travelers.

And during Earth Month 2026, these efforts are especially critical. The Earth and all of its creatures are under pressure like never before. The Sierra Club, one of the most influential and enduring non-profit organizations in the United States, pointed out in an article earlier this year that within moments of taking office last January, the Trump Administration embarked on an "all-out assault on the environment [and] climate action."

From rescinding laws surrounding greenhouse gases that were meant to rein in pollution and slow down planetary warming to terminating solar and wind projects that represented important and inexpensive alternatives to planet-heating fossil fuels, and instead increasing the country's reliance on environmentally harmful coal-fired power plants, the current U.S. president has done immense harm to efforts to protect the planet on numerous levels. (And these are merely a few examples. Check out this tracker to learn more.)

These developments in the United States are just one example of the challenges facing the environment and the planet. Across the world biodiversity is disappearing at an alarming rate.

According to a United Kingdom government report, the average size of monitored wildlife populations declined by 73% between 1970 and 2020. Meanwhile, populations of vertebrate species have declined by an average of 68% since 1970. Freshwater ecosystem species populations have shown the largest losses, falling 84% in the same period.

The UK report concludes that "degradation is occurring across all regions and ecosystems," and could even affect UK national security.

Another recent report, this one published by the international Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), finds that biodiversity loss is no longer just an environmental issue but a systemic economic risk, affecting financial stability, supply chains and even human well-being.

These are just some of the reasons why it's important as travelers to make thoughtful decisions about where we travel, how we travel and where we stay when exploring the world.

And turning to the point of this article: If a trip to Mexico is in your future, the good news is there's a wide variety of hotels and resorts throughout the country that have made sustainable, eco-friendly actions a top priority and are implementing increasingly creative, engaging and meaningful ways to help stand up for Mother Nature.

If caring for the planet is on your agenda as a traveler (as it should be) or you're a tried and true environmentalist whose always on the hunt for ways to step up your game, read on to learn about six stunning and immersive hotels and resorts that deserve a place on your travel bucket list.

Iberostar Selection Paraiso Lindo, Riviera Maya

An expansive Caribbean beachfront property, Iberostar Selection Paraiso Lindo offers guests the opportunity to support responsible, regenerative tourism through its partnership with the local excursion company Bejil-Ha.

A tour company founded by local youth to reconnect people with nature, Bejil-Ha's tours emphasize cultural immersion. That includes providing authentic experiences in the region's lesser-visited and revitalized cenotes and the Mayan jungle.

Guests on most of the Bejil-Ha tours are even welcomed into a local woman's home to enjoy a delicious meal and support the women in their desire to open a restaurant eventually.

"This partnership reflects Iberostar's broader commitment to responsible and regenerative tourism while giving guests the opportunity to experience the destination through the perspective of the local community and offering support," says Gemma Andreu, the property's hotel marketing and brand experience director.

The Bejil-Ha tours are merely one facet of Paraiso Lindo's commitment to the planet. Iberostar also features a coral lab program, which represents a major investment in coral reef restoration and marine ecosystem protection, reinforcing the brand's long-term environmental commitments. "Guests are welcomed into the lab to learn about the initiative and the different types of corals," says Andreu.

And still that's not all when it comes to eco-friendly initiatives. As part of Iberostar's Wave of Change initiative, the resort also protects mangroves and created a sea turtle habitat that guests can visit on the beach.

Equally importantly at a time when the world is awash in plastic waste that not only can take up to 500 years to decompose, but can also be deadly for wildlife, the property is also a single-use plastic-free hotel. (This alone is worth a huge round of applause.)

As for the property amenities, guests at Paraiso Lindo and the Lindo Complex (comprised of five properties in total) can enjoy a water park with slides, a pool that simulates ocean waves, a lazy river, and five more pool areas. There's also a Star Camp on-site for children and teens, and when you're ready to eat, check out one of the seven dining options.

Impression Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo

An ultra-luxury, adults-only oasis, Impression Isla Mujeres (named "The Most Instagrammable Hotel in the World" by Luxury Travel Advisor for two years in a row) is located steps away from turquoise waters and world-renowned beaches.

In addition to its droolworthy setting, Impression Isla Mujeres is a resort dedicated to conservation. At the heart of those efforts is a deeply meaningful and important partnership with the Saving Our Sharks Foundation, an initiative that's successfully transitioned 32 local fishermen from shark hunting to becoming "Guardians of the Sea." Meaning they're now dive guides and conservationists who lead guests on marine monitoring trips to protect the island's vital biodiversity.

The resort also donates $1 per guest per night, along with proceeds from sustainably sourced merchandise and special art collaborations, to fund shark research, education, and the livelihood-transition program. Guests are also invited to actively participate in critical shark-saving efforts by "adopting" a shark (meaning signing up to make ongoing monthly contributions that help fund essential shark conservation work.)

"Sustainability is further woven into the very fabric of the resort, where environmental stewardship is treated as a natural extension of the guest experience," says Mourad Essafi, the property's general manager.

"The property operates with a zero single-use plastic policy, supported by an on-site bottling plant that produces over 4,000 reusable glass bottles annually," adds Essafi.

Impression Isla Mujeres also features bio-architecture that incorporates sustainably sourced Mexican bamboo, solar panels to heat guest water and furnishings that are handcrafted by local artisans from the Yucatán Peninsula, says Essafi.

The hotel's "commitment to sustainability remains a top priority year-round," Essafi adds.

El Cielo Resort & Winery, Valle de Guadalupe

Located in the heart of Mexico's Valle de Guadalupe (a region known for its Mediterranean climate ideal for growing wine), El Cielo Resort & Winery pairs luxurious vineyard accommodations with a serious commitment to sustainable hospitality.

The property features Tuscany-inspired villas, farm-to-table dining, and organic vineyards. As for protecting the planet, eco-conscious practices are woven throughout the El Cielo resort experience.

Sustainability initiatives include pioneering solar energy as one of the first wineries in the region to install solar panels, cultivating grapes without synthetic pesticides to preserve soil health and biodiversity, and utilizing trained Harris' Hawks as a natural, chemical-free method of vineyard protection.

The resort also captures rainwater in custom-built reservoirs to support sustainable irrigation and create habitats for migratory birds, alongside additional environmentally mindful touches such as lightweight wine bottles, water treatment systems, and LED lighting designed to reduce light pollution.

Waldorf Astoria Riviera Maya

Waldorf Astoria Riviera Maya

Perched on the Caribbean coast, the Waldorf Astoria Riviera Maya encompasses an expansive 421 acres, with 237 acres of protected mangrove forest that's recognized as a "Voluntarily Conserved Area" by Mexico's National Commission of Natural Protected Areas.

The protected mangrove is merely one of the notable conservation highlights here. Nearly every detail of the luxe 173-room resort reflects a commitment to preserving the natural landscape—from pathways created to follow historic ranching trails to 16 speed reducers throughout the property that were added to help protect the region's wildlife from harm.

Waldorf Astoria Riveria Maya also features 50 dedicated wildlife crossings (including three aerial bridges) meant to help species like spider monkeys and coatis move safely through the landscape. There are even underground tunnels designed to support aquatic life.

When guests are ready for a closer look at the abundance of nature and diversity here, they can explore Puerto Morelos National Reef Park, located just offshore and home to the world's second-largest coral reef barrier, as well as more than 669 recorded marine species.

Waldorf Astoria Riviera Maya also prioritizes sustainable resource management. Examples on this front include using a reverse osmosis system to convert seawater for use and responsibly treating and reinjecting it into the mangrove. In addition, as part of Hilton's LightStay program, the property tracks and reduces its environmental impact, recycling over 156,000 kilograms of waste in 2024 alone.

If all of this isn't reason enough to visit, you'll love the resort's luxurious guest rooms and suites, each of which features ocean views and private balconies with a soaking tub. A spa, five restaurants and bars, and the opportunity to participate in curated activities that offer a deeper, more authentic connection to local culture are still more examples of why this property is one of our favorites.

Hotel San Cristobal, Todos Santos, Mexico

Hotel San Cristobal, Todos Santos

There's much to love about the 32-room luxury beachfront property Hotel San Cristobal. Its stunning beachfront location, its striking, minimalist Baja architecture, the fact that it was awarded a Michelin star in 2025….

But for this discussion, let's focus on the resort's extensive sustainability efforts. Or as property representatives like to say: At Hotel San Cristobal, sustainability isn't just a program. It's something that guests can see, taste, and experience throughout a stay.

Some of the notable efforts on the sustainability front include:

  • Diverting 68.8% of total property waste from local landfills through a rigorous waste separation program in the last year.
  • Transforming organic waste into 1,560 kilograms of compost that was used for an on-property garden that was planted to supply the resort's three restaurants.
  • Local food sourcing that prioritizes vignerons who farm biodynamically, naturally, or organically in Mexico to reduce transport impact and keep money in the community.
  • Maintaining a zero-plastic policy and providing ongoing staff training in comprehensive waste practices through partnership with Cero Basura.

Hotel San Cristobal also operates its own desalination and wastewater treatment plants, making the hotel largely self-sufficient for water needs, without drawing from the community's supply.

And given the property's prime location on a stunning beach, Hotel San Cristobal also makes a point of hosting bimonthly beach and community cleanups for team members, an effort that's been taking place for more than three years.

All of this, and a Michelin star to boot.

Four Seasons Resort Tamarindo

Four Seasons Resort Tamarindo

For ardent nature lovers (raising hand), it's hard to beat the location of the Four Season Resort Tamarindo. This secluded beachfront resort in a largely undiscovered region along Mexico's Pacific Coast sits within a private, 3,000-acre nature reserve. Think: lush jungle meets stunning ocean.

The property was created to be a transportive haven. It features a low-density design and offers expansive landscape views from both beach and cliffside vantage points. As for the sustainability measures, there's much to discuss on this front as well.

Let's start with Rancho Lola, the resort's 35-acre, low-impact sustainable farm that embodies a "Grown Not Flown" philosophy meant to ensure that fresh, organic produce is harvested right on-site. The property is also home to a thriving beekeeping program and circular food waste initiative that includes pigs helping to minimize waste.

Four Seasons Tamarindo also emphasizes a “Puro Talento Mexicano” philosophy that celebrates Mexican craftsmanship through collaborations with more than 50 artisans and brands. That includes working with non-profit brands and projects such as Taller Maya and Ensamble Artesano, both of which focus on protecting pre–Hispanic culture.

"What we cultivate here—whether at the farm, foraging ingredients for dishes or through our relationships with local artisans—is rooted in respect, and intended for guests to engage more thoughtfully with the rich culture, and the enduring spirit of the Costalegre region," says Felix Murillo, General Manager of Four Seasons Resort Tamarindo.

Finally, let's circle back to where we started: the property's 3,000-acre nature reserve. The resort is committed to only developing 3% of that space. And it employs its own biologists to tend for the local habitat, which includes more than 70 endemic species. All of this is part of the property's effort to protect and celebrate everything from plant and marine life, to the native trees and land animals.

"At Four Seasons Tamarindo, our greatest responsibility—and privilege—is to care for both the guests who visit and the land that surrounds," says Murillo. "It seems only fitting that we prioritize preserving, protecting and fostering the distinct eco-system with the 3,000-acre nature reserve where Tamarindo is located."
